She ethnic attire, a significant cultural symbol in Luoyuan county, Fuzhou city, Fujian province, has been recognized as a national-level intangible cultural heritage item under the category of folk customs.
The essence of She ethnic attire is most evident in women's clothing, distinguished by intricate phoenix motifs woven into the fabric, earning it the name "phoenix attire". The traditional garment consists of seven key components, including tops, skirts, and shoes, along with six accessories like phoenix crowns, earrings, and rings.
The creation of She ethnic women's attire involves a collaborative process between skilled tailors and embroiderers. Embroiderers prepare embellishments such as collar and apron embroideries for tailors to incorporate into the garments. This meticulous craftsmanship extends to the final stages, where intricate embroideries are applied on the chest, sleeves, lapels, and skirts.
The attire worn by She women in Huokou is a living testament of the She ethnic history and culture, preserving memories of their ancestral past. Rooted in the rich heritage of hunting, agriculture, and cultural exchange, the attire-making techniques have been preserved and showcased during various festivities and social gatherings, linking modern practices to ancient traditions.
Beyond aesthetic appeal, She ethnic attire plays a pivotal role in fostering a sense of community and shared identity among the She people. Furthermore, these traditional garments serve as invaluable resources for scholars and researchers seeking to unravel the authentic history of the She ethnic group. Notably, in 1975, the She women's attire was officially recognized as the national representative attire of the She ethnic group.
