Quanzhou (Li Yaobao) paper-cutting is a traditional folk art originating from Quanzhou city, Fujian province. Recognized as an extension project under the traditional arts category, it’s included in the first batch of the National-level Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative Projects List.
Quanzhou paper-cutting passed down through generations, traces its roots back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907), flourishing during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). In the mid-20th century, Li Yaobao’s paper-cutting patterns marked a revolutionary leap in the artistry of Quanzhou paper-cutting, transitioning from a rustic style to one of elegance and intricacy.
Li Yaobao (1892–1983) was born into a family with generations of expertise in lacquer painting and paper-cutting crafts. A leading figure in the southern school of paper-cutting, he refined Quanzhou's paper-cutting style by merging traditional techniques with artistic inspiration from paper art, relief sculpture, ceramic inlay, woodcarving, engraving, architecture, and color painting.
His works are known for their rich and diverse themes, with novel and unique designs that are remarkably lifelike. The striking contrast between black and white in his pieces creates an exquisite and orderly artistic style.
Li's paper-cutting pieces have been selected for international exhibitions and exported to over ten countries across Europe and Asia. Additionally, he applied the art of paper-cutting to the nearly lost boneless filament lanterns, earning widespread acclaim both at home and abroad.
Today, the Quanzhou municipal government continues to prioritize the preservation and transmission of the Li family's paper-cutting craftsmanship. In June 2007, the Li Yaobao Paper-cutting Apprenticeship Workshop was officially established at the Sixth Middle School of Quanzhou to safeguard this ICH.
