Wuzu Boxing, primarily practiced in Quanzhou city, Fujian province, is listed as a representative project in the second batch of national-level intangible cultural heritage in the categories of traditional sports, entertainment, and acrobatics. The martial arts heritage of Quanzhou dates back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420) or even earlier. By the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the martial arts training was thriving among commoners and temple monks.
Quanzhou Southern Shaolin martial arts, created by modern martial arts master Cai Yuming, combines several styles including White Crane Boxing, Arhat Boxing, and Taizu Boxing techniques. It is considered the oldest and most adopted style among the Wuzu Boxing the seven major martial arts styles in Fujian. According to existing ancient manuals, the Wuzu Boxing includes five styles with over 200 routines. It encompasses a comprehensive system of empty-handed techniques and various long and short weapons. The smaller routines are concise with around 10 steps, while the larger routines can be complex with over 100 techniques.
Wuzu Boxing emphasizes precision and practicality, with a simple and easy-to-learn appearance that focuses on simplicity and utility. The unique feature of Wuzu Boxing is that each style has its unique characteristics, allowing practitioners to cross-train due to the similarities in techniques.
Since the Ming and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties, Quanzhou Southern Shaolin martial arts has spread to regions such as Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia, becoming a branch of Quanzhou Southern Shaolin martial arts. It is an important component of Minnan culture.
