The Gulangyu Island Scenic Area is a picturesque destination southwest of Xiamen Island, separated by the 600-meter-wide Lujiang Strait and accessible via a brief 5-minute ferry ride.

Surrounded by the sea and nearby peninsulas and islands, Gulangyu features rolling hills, spherical rocks, and lush greenery, offering a perpetual spring-like climate.

It is a must-visit for tourists in Xiamen and a renowned 5A-rated tourist attraction, the highest classification in China's tourism rating system.

Historically, Gulangyu was called Round Sandy Island. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), it was renamed Gulangyu, inspired by the Gulang (Drumming Wave) Rock. This rock, located in the island's southwestern region, produces a sound reminiscent of a drum when struck by waves, lending the island its evocative name.

Gulangyu Island is celebrated for its scenic spots and historical sites, including Sunlight Rock, Bright Moon Garden, Shuzhuang Garden, the Piano Museum, and the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall.

Its cultural and historical significance was recognized globally when it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017. Additionally, in 2002, the Chinese Musicians' Association honored Gulangyu as the "Island of Music" due to its high per capita piano ownership and the presence of over 100 families engaged in music.

The island is part of the Gulangyu-Wanshi Mountain National Scenic Area. Known as the "Garden on the Sea", this subtropical island cityscape blends seamlessly with the urban environment, resulting in the harmonious integration of city and nature.
